The story celebrates the rising tide of thermic bathing across Minnesota, a movement that started in Minneapolis a decade ago. Great Northern’s Chief Programming Officer Kate Nordstrum discovered saunapreneurs John Pederson and Rod Buhrsmith’s original Sauna Village in South Minneapolis in 2019, and later invited them to expand the experience for the festival:
“It was obvious to me their work was culture shaping; an art form that responds to the needs of a specific place and time; and builds community on top of it all,” commented on the article.
“There would be eyerolls at first,” the article quotes Pederson, reflecting on the early Sauna Village days in South Minneapolis.
Thank you Ernesto Londono for sharing this story. And congratulations to the entire Great Northern Sauna Village team and wider sauna community for making this such a vibrant and welcoming experience—and now a beloved part of the festival.
